REVIEW: fear farm

Located within the High Desert is the legendary multi-haunted house attraction, Fear Farm. We have been attending since its inception and have enjoyed watching it grow from a modest hayride and maze experience (in the family’s front yard) into the incredible and massive DIY mini-theme park attraction that it is today. Its Knott's influenced ghost town gone awry experience is complemented by the surrounding desert landscape infused with prickly pear, cholla, and hedgehog cacti. This year’s attraction, which includes two mazes plus a hayride, continues to add to its legacy of being one of the best haunts in the Southern California area.

Throughout the years Fear Farm has moved locations multiple times ranging from a front yard to a massive outdoor paintball facility. It therefore should come as no surprise that this year’s location is new - and improved - having moved away from the Riverside area to Hesperia, near its original home in Phelan. The nature of Fear Farm’s sets - often having a Wild West meets demonic farm theme - is much more at home within this High Desert atmosphere. The supernatural and almost lawless feeling of this more remote environment enhances the intensity that this haunt has become known for.

For 2025 Fear Farm brings back one of the best mazes around: Sundown Manor. We have seen this maze through multiple incarnations and it’s always exciting to see their approach with every new season. This haunt has an impressive first room which incorporates an illusion of sinking into the floor of the home - an illusion created by an actor walking on stilts, lighting, and lasers hitting fog. It's an amazing trick that we have not seen duplicated by any other haunt yet.

Your ticket will also get you a trip on the Haunted Hayride in addition to the Scarecrow’s Curse maze. The latter you might have seen in a condensed form at Midsummer Scream’s "Hall of Shadows" where it occupied a large part of the show floor. The sinister story of the murder of Elias Crow and the ensuing curse on the town of Black Hollow became an event favorite, and the perfect backdrop for photo-ops.

If you are uncertain of driving to Hesperia from LA, we are happy to say it’s easy to make an evening of it by combining a visit to Fear Farm with All Saints Lunatic Asylum, High Desert Haunt, and H&L's Realm of Horror. In fact, we would encourage you to do so and enjoy a truly unique environment famous for its paranormal activity and otherworldly phenomena. They do things a little differently once you are over the mountain pass and we have no doubt that any haunt enthusiast in the SoCal area will not want to miss this experience.
