review: fairbrook manor

During the pandemic of 2020 we stumbled across a chilling, interactive yard display in Long Beach entitled “Fairbrook Manor”. With its mournful ghosts hiding among the midnight blue shadows, this haunt felt like a strange trip to the bygone Victorian era. The meditative pacing of this haunt echoed its exquisite presentation that included animatronics and a host of illusions. The memory of our visit has stayed with us as a Covid-era Halloween experience that has made a permanent impression in our overwhelmed haunter brains.

The architect of Fairbrook Manor, Robert Duck, decided last year to expand his incredible display into a bona fide haunt. The results were impressive as he skipped the usual growing pains of learning how to build a DIY yard haunt and instead jumped right into creating a high quality, theme park grade attraction. The story of Fairbrook Manor is straight out of Duck’s imagination and tells the tale of a woman named Victoria Fairbook and her kidnapped children who rise from the dead in order to haunt the ruins of her abandoned mansion. The maze weaves the tale impeccably thanks to the rich talent of the local theater’s drama students who were recruited by Duck... all within the confines of nothing more than his front yard!

Fairbrook Manor is a beautifully haunting experience complete with Victorian props, swampy sets, and ghostly entities. Robert Duck and his local community have created a great achievement with this haunt - all while raising funds for the local drama school and food bank.
