review: glenwood haunted mine

This season has felt like a strange transitional year for haunts - some of our favorite mazes have been on their final run (Corona Haunt, The Haunted Shack) while others have gone dark forever (Into the Black). And while these haunts are sadly being retired to their eternal slumber, there are a few new haunts that have made very impressive debuts this year. Most notably, we loved our visit to the Glenwood Haunted Mine - a completely mind-blowing, theme park-level experience.

The Haunted Mine is a creation by Kirby (no last name given), who has taken advantage of his sloped yard to build a very realistic, subterranean experience. The design of the Haunted Mine's build feels like it could be a part of both Big Thunder Railroad and the Calico Mine Ride. Before you enter, you set off a dynamite detonator, causing a massive explosion in the mouth of the mine. You then begin your journey through an incredible life-like mine where it feels like you are declining deep into ghostly, haunted caverns where monsters and mayhem lie in wait.

The mine’s rotten floorboards illuminate with red light in order to appear on fire, and vibrate and shift underneath your feet. Eventually you reach an elevator - similar to the ones we have experienced at Rotten Apple 907 and Pirate’s Cave - that brings you deeper into this twisted underground world. As you press the elevator button it begins to go down as a rickety chain sticking through the ceiling spins recklessly as you descend deeper down the shaft. Once out, through the illusion of switching characters and the wall of the elevator exit, you enter into a swamp room (the effect of shooting a green laser across low lying fog) where mutant characters come at you from every angle to push you through to the exit.

Kirby has done a really fantastic job with his debut year as a haunt builder. This makes sense as he professionally builds props for private tiki bars and has even built his own elaborate tiki bar ,“The Rumpus Room”, for his home. Kirby’s imagination, infinite and unwavering, makes the Glenwood Haunted Mine a must-visit attraction of the season.
