review: horrors of the deep

Due to the pandemic, it has been a few years since Micheltorena Elementary School’s Pumpkinfest has hosted its legendary annual haunted house. The themes of the haunted house change every Halloween season, making each new visit filled with mystery as you never know what awaits you when the maze drags you underneath the guts of the school's 1905 building. This year's maze, “Horrors of The Deep”, was brimming with imagination and artistry and conveyed a strong message that we need to save our oceans from pollutants and mutant sea creatures.

“Horrors of The Deep” begins with the ghost of a pirate warning visitors of the journey ahead. You then enter into the belly of a whale where you meet a mysterious jellyfish who is your guide to a safe passage out. Along the way you experience a glowing infinity room, escape the horrifying kelp creatures, run from the insidious ocean trash monster, and come face to face with a monstrous kraken puppet who devours your jellyfish guide, who has sacrificed their life to save you as they die with a horrible blood-curdling scream. After your escape, you are given magical paint to decorate the coral reef with so that the oceans can be saved. The psychedelic colors and original designs of the creatures and sets were stunning and soaked in the incredible projections created by the lighting director for Lil Nas X.

Horrors of The Deep is one of the best all ages mazes that we have experienced this season. Once again, Micheltorena’s Pumpkinfest has offered a wonderfully surreal and inspiring maze for those who prefer imagination and fantasy over gore and intense scares.
