review: murder house productions presents: ghosted: reply or die
Ever since their humble beginnings within a small garage at the end of a cul-de-sac in Thousand Oaks, Murder House Productions (MHP) has been delivering some of the most exciting haunts in Southern California. The team behind MHP, Aurora Persichetti and Kyle Warner, began haunt building as teenagers and have maintained their reputation of being true trailblazers who hold a unique vision and dedication to building new creations every year….and 2022’s “Ghosted: Reply or Die” is no exception.
Located within an Arlington Heights storefront, “Ghosted” beautifully showcases MHP’s storytelling talent. Beginning by entering into a laboratory as a human trial experiment, you subsequently cross over into a supernatural, sci-fi themed realm that has trapped people who have been “ghosted” on dating apps. The maze has an unbelievably immersive set design that is drenched in superb scare actors. There are tons of nods to 80’s horror like neon lights and green slime containers, along with contemporary elements like Grindr notification sounds and destroyed smartphones. “Ghosted” is an impressive amalgam of millennial digital life and classic sci-fi horror.
The details within this maze are incredible. Your perspective at times is forced to look downward from a ceiling while intense and precisely timed actors achieve the best scares. The light and sound syncing is so flawlessly executed that we were uncertain of what techniques were employed. Throughout the maze the sound remained unbelievably detailed and clear and enhanced an already perfectly horrifying experience. There were also many Easter eggs, including hilarious printed out app messages and doctor’s notes warning of things being amiss.
MHP is one of our favorite builders in the So Cal area and “Ghosted” is a masterpiece. We encourage everyone to support these extremely talented artists and visit what is surely one of the best haunts of the season.
