review: the nightmare in whiting woods

As a mysterious, unadvertised maze, The Nightmare in Whiting Woods has been haunting the hills of its Glendale neighborhood for years. It’s a “blink and you miss it” haunt, meaning it only comes to life for a few short hours on Halloween night. Remaining a popular maze for over two decades as a strictly word of mouth haunt - they refuse to make socials for it and do not want their address listed online yet still have hundreds of people visit every year.

This massive handcrafted maze has become legendary, never repeating its seasonal themes. The haunt begins with the queue of hundreds of people lining up along a steep incline with dozens of steps leading uphill to the haunt. Eventually you encounter a massive, shack-like structure that houses the maze. Following an incredibly long pathway you enter through parts of the home, around the back yard, and then through another pathway that spits you out onto a side street.

The very unique theme for this year's haunt was stink bugs. The story began when you enter the home and a demented man begins discussing bugs with you. His manic state is hard to follow but you can tell he has fallen under the spell of something mystical and strange. As you go through the maze, spiders have overtaken a black lit graveyard and giant bugs come out for jump scares as an exterminator sits in surrender as the town is under attack. This experience was hysterical, bizarre, and delivered with a particular charm that only the Nightmare in Whiting Woods is capable of.

We are completely in awe of the spectacular work achieved by Nightmare in Whiting Woods with their incredible builds year after year, only to be open for a few hours on Halloween night. This is a true passion project that thoroughly entertains hundreds upon hundreds of visitors every year. This haunt fills us with awe and wonder every Halloween, making it the perfect experience to close out the season.
