review: rotten apple 907

If there is one haunt that has undoubtedly influenced numerous generations of haunters, it is Rotten Apple 907. Since 2003, multiple generations of the Meyer family have offered their incredible front yard haunt for free to their Burbank neighborhood while raising thousands of dollars in donations for Volunteers of the Burbank Animal Shelter. Rotten Apple’s generosity of spirit is equally matched by their consistent and outstanding quality of storytelling, construction, and characters that change themes almost every year.

This year's original theme is entitled “SSSSS” and brings you deep into a jungle where mysterious snakes reside. Entering through the boarded up door of a cavern that is illuminated by a few abandoned, flickering lanterns, you are immediately immersed into the maze’s feral and lush world. Real tree branches dangle around you as the sounds of nature buzz in your ears. Giant animatronic spiders and snakes lunge towards you as you try to avoid the skeletons of long-forgotten travelers - hinting at the dangers that lie ahead. The suspense is wonderful and sets the pace for what has become Rotten Apple’s signature tone that infuses their otherworldly and horrifying mazes.

The details of this haunt are completely astounding in their meticulousness and execution. This year the Meyer family has installed a real, running waterfall where a character (who’s being eaten alive by a massive snake) tells you to enter into a home within the jungle. Once inside the home it becomes evident that there is a rather sinister form of serpent worship taking place. Dusty skeletons overlook decrepit tables covered in snake figurines, while those explorers left alive have been “charmed by the snakes” in some sort of mysterious possession. Eventually you are led into a snake ritual where incantations by a serpent-worshiping cult are being said aloud. These chants awaken a massive snake puppet who comes for your soul in the grand finale.

If you want to experience the best qualities of a haunt that include fantastic scare actors and immersive collaborative art, all the while helping a good cause, then you should visit Rotten Apple. The Meyer family are absolutely incredible people who have kept their home haunt alive and thriving in their neighborhood for almost two decades, overcoming any obstacles thrown their way. Rotten Apple is a wonderful labor of love that perfectly captures the Halloween spirit.
