review: the haunted rose

Last year the sci-fi themed home haunt, The Haunted Rose, moved from its original location at a suburban home to its new location at the Whittier Museum. While this maze (and sometimes display) has been a home haunt for years, this new, larger space offers a greater capacity for more elaborate and expansive ideas to be brought to life. The Whittier Museum’s permanent exhibits, like the airplane replicas and ephemera from local history, offer the perfect backdrop for this year’s maze, “Beyond the Gates of Turnbull”.

The maze begins with a visit to an old, white-eyed farmer who leads you to a barn where his daughter reveals that something in this town is slightly “off”. As you leave and enter an asylum drenched in red light, a demented doctor surprises you out of nowhere to display his x-ray collection of the broken brains of his patients - all of whom begin running around in a maddened state. This leads you out into a forested area where numerous red-eyed, long-horned demonic entities have come to life. Eventually you arrive at a flickering Lovecraftian communications tower - a signature homage by The Haunted Rose.

For years Whittier has been blessed by the seasonal work of The Haunted Rose and their unique attractions that are infused with cosmic horror. They successfully capture the spirit of Lovecraft both in their storytelling and presentation. Beyond the Gates of Turnbull was a truly remarkable maze of the season and well worth the trip south of Los Angeles.
