review: the haunted shack

As we wind down on our Halloween reviews for 2022 we are definitely feeling the onset of an intense comedown - experiencing both extremes of depression co-existing with massive relief. To be honest this has been one of the stranger seasons yet - feeling somewhat transitional as a lot of haunts are either dark or closing for good this year. We were especially shocked to find out that this would be the last run for one of our favorites The Haunted Shack. They made this announcement right as we showed up, and though we were very sad, we were still in high anticipation for our final visit to this legendary, long-running haunt.

When we moved to Los Angeles,The Haunted Shack, along with Rotten Apple 907, Backwoods, and the House of Restless Spirits, were our first steps into the fruitful scene of Haunted Houses that Los Angeles has to offer. These top-tier, extremely passionate builds lit a spark for us that would inspire what would eventually become our Haunts of LA site. What impressed us about The Haunted Shack was, like Rotten Apple 907, the fact that they would never repeat themes and changed with every season. For 2022, their final year ever, they offered up a memorial of vignettes from their past haunts for everyone to experience.

As we walked through each room we remembered specifics of those years and what we were doing - ranging from significant elements in our lives to where we went to eat after haunting. Seeing props from their Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer maze reminded us of their incredible moving glacier, while the room covered in spooky clothes reminded us of their swinging, bouncing man. It was a bittersweet visit to close out our amazing haunt season.

The Haunted Shack’s contributions to the creative collective of Southern California mazes are immense. Their legendary 26 year run established them as true trailblazers in the haunt community and a mandatory destination every season. This is a massive loss for the world of haunts, and Halloween will never be the same again. We will always have a special place in our hearts for the Haunted Shack - one of our favorite mazes of all time. May it haunt our hearts forever.
